Analogue Debut

CCTV may now be primarily used for home security, but when the CCTV camera made its debut in Germany in 1942, it was used to remotely observe the launch of V-2 rockets.

At this stage a CCTV system was completely analogue, with footage recorded to a video cassette recorder (VCR).

1949 – George Orwell publishes 1984.

Long before CCTV cameras were widely used, it was anticipated that they would have a large role in the surveillance of the future.

1968- The first use of CCTV in the USA.

CCTV cameras were installed along a main street in Olean, New York, in order to help reduce crime.

1987 – The first use of CCTV in the UK.

King’s Lynn in Norfolk was the first place in the UK to trial CCTV.

Direct Video Recording (DVR)

The switch from analogue to digital is one that occurred across the whole world of technology, and CCTV was no exception.

VCA works to identify abnormal changes in an environment, and it can be combined with biometrics to track individuals and monitor their behaviour.

2009 – Internet Eyes website announced.

The site’s premise was to pay the public to act as remote CCTV viewers for cameras that weren’t always monitored. The idea was criticised by civil rights campaigners.

2012 – Faster processing power for biometric cameras.

A biometric CCTV camera in Japan is reported to scan through its database of faces at 36 million a second.

CCTV cameras have continued to increase in popularity, and for most they provide a great comfort!
